<![CDATA[Dr. Joanna: Why it’s OK to Be Hungry]]> Tue, 27 Feb 2018 21:35:00 +0000 Nicole Kennelly I’ve been amazed at how many people over the years have told me they aren’t really ever hungry. But when you think about it, perhaps it’s not so surprising. We have access to food pretty much 24/7 and there is little risk that it is going to run out. This is a relatively new situation for the human race and one that we are not collectively coping with terribly well.

If you never truly feel hungry you are most likely overeating or at the very least you are not responding to your body’s cues to eat, but when society norms tell you to – does 1 o’clock mean lunchtime regardless of how hungry you are? Does 3pm signal a cuppa with a biscuit or some other sweet treat for afternoon tea?

Feeling hungry is a good thing though. In fact, I would even go so far as to say it’s essential for optimal health and wellbeing. Here’s why.

<![CDATA[Dr. Joanna: What I Look for in Home Delivery Meals]]> Fri, 09 Mar 2018 02:27:00 +0000 Nicole Kennelly I look to cook. But I hate having to cook when it’s just assumed I will. When that “what’s for dinner?” question is thrown at me when I’m still at my desk after 5pm, cooking becomes a chore. Another thing I have to get done in my day.

It’s not always that way. When I’m organised, there is food in the fridge and I roughly know what I’m going to whip up, getting in the kitchen is a pleasure.

So, what to do on the nights where my enthusiasm to cook is under par? I outsource. I want someone else to do the cooking for me. But, I still want to eat well. Fortunately there are some great options for ready-made meals and you’ve already guessed no doubt that Dietlicious gets my tick of approval. But why?

<![CDATA[Dr. Joanna: Are Frozen Meals Healthy: Frozen vs Fresh]]> Wed, 11 Apr 2018 23:13:00 +0000 Nicole Kennelly Does frozen food deserve a bad rap? I think that’s partly because of the rise of budget brand options flooding our super market freezers. There are many unhealthy foods to be found in the frozen food aisle such as ice cream, factory produced party pies and ultra-processed chicken nuggets to name a few, but to label all frozen food as processed or unhealthy is just not true. The truth is that utilising frozen foods in your home freezer can help you and your family achieve a healthier diet.

<![CDATA[Dr. Joanna: Keeping the Winter Weight Off]]> Thu, 14 Jun 2018 07:08:00 +0000 Joanna O'Sullivan You’ve probably heard the expression ‘summer bodies are made in winter’ and while I really dislike the whole emphasis on getting your body beach ready for the warmer months, there is some truth to the expression.

Winter is a time when many of us tend to gain a kilo or two. Colder weather makes heartier, comfort food more appealing and extra layers of clothing makes it easier to ignore a little extra fat storage. At the same time inclement weather – I’m looking out at sheets of rain as I write – makes it tougher to get out to exercise, particularly if you’re a fan of outdoor exercise. Bootcamp on the beach is not such an attractive option in the cold, wind and rain.

<![CDATA[Dr. Joanna: The Benefits of Soup]]> Wed, 11 Jul 2018 01:37:00 +0000 Joanna O'Sullivan In the colder winter months it’s easy to let good nutrition slip as you seek more comforting, hearty meals. Chopping up a whole bunch of vegies to throw together into a salad probably doesn’t appeal and so vegie intake can really take a dive. This is where soup comes to the rescue. A hearty meal in a bowl that warms you up, while when made with the right ingredients, packs in good nutrition. Here are 5 benefits of soup.

<![CDATA[Dr. Joanna McMillan: The Healthy Way to Losing Baby Weight]]> Wed, 08 Aug 2018 00:55:00 +0000 Joanna O'Sullivan Forget about the pictures on social media of celebrities bouncing back into their teeny tiny bodies in the blink of an eye after giving birth. They don’t live in the same world as most of us. Actually, you shouldn’t feel envy at their seemingly easy return to their pre-baby body, just imagine the pressure they were likely under to give that impression.

<![CDATA[Cold War - Fresh vs Frozen Food]]> Wed, 05 Sep 2018 05:55:00 +0000 Joanna O'Sullivan Did you know that fresh produce begins to deteriorate and lose its nutritional value from the moment it’s harvested? Take spinach for example – a Science Direct study showed that after just one day in the fridge, 29% of its Vitamin C content was lost and after 7 days the losses had grown to a whopping 94%!
