Janel Horton - Mastermind + Masterchef Behind Gourmet Dinner Service

Janel started cooking when her Dad built her an oven with red painted stove rings when she was 4 years old. Then, as a teenager, she hijacked her mother’s kitchen and started making homemade Rum Baba’s (classic French dessert cake) which she sold to Sydney’s leading restaurants.

When she moved into the cut throat world of finance her diet was a complete disaster, with no time to plan, shop or cook. Ending up at home late with what she called the invisible meal, an empty plate, had to stop.

So, in 1994 Janel traded the suit and stilettos for an apron and started Gourmet Dinner Service. Since then she’s cooked more than three million meals, been included in Business Review Weekly’s annual list of best female entrepreneurs and expanded her operations across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide.

Our kitchen is headed by foodies who love eating and love cooking. Coming from all corners of the globe they bring expertise, tradition, and authentic recipes…and none of them consider McDonalds a ‘restaurant’!

The kitchen team is like a well-oiled machine, turning out lovingly made meals ready for your table. Overseen by Singh, our Exec Chef all our recipes are tried and tested so your favourite meals always has the same great taste.

Christie, is our top tester Chef, our creative guru who is tasked with creating new meals for you each month. As a mum of three she is well qualified to know what will go down a treat in most families.


Why Us?

Gourmet Dinner Service has stood the test of time, keeping families happy, healthy and satisfied since 1994. Dietlicious, the sister company to GDS was established in 2010. This was in response to Australia’s expanding waistlines and supersizing food!

Today there are around 100 players in the ready-meal market but as they say ‘The Cream Rises to the Top’ and that’s where we sit for these simple reasons:

  1. Trusted company – We’ve been around since the beginning and what we promise, we deliver.
  2. Taste – Our food really is in a class of its own. Our passionate chefs know how to combine ingredients and create flavour; cooking great tasting meals which still allow you to lose weight.
  3. Health – We only use top quality, real food when we cook. And because we freeze the majority of meals, there are no nasty additives. After all, freezing is nature’s preservative.
  4. Value – We are certainly not the cheapest on the block but here’s another saying ‘You pay for what you get’ and what we offer is quality, chef-made meals that are big on protein, flavour and nutrition, plus the convenience of on-time door step deliveries.

Customer Service

Our customer service is second to none because there are happy people on this end who will help answer questions and solve any issues. Susan (originally from Scotland) and Bim (who we stole from Sweden) are our friendly Customer Service Managers and they are resident experts on our extensive menu and delivery practices. Many of you will be familiar with Anita and Janel who are also on hand to offer phone support and a smile, among their other marketing and management duties.

Our Drivers

We have a fleet of vans with our own drivers, who are kept busy on the roads in three states delivering food 5-6 days per week. Some of you will be familiar with your local drivers. In Sydney Greg, Peter and Dan are the local drivers zipping through daily traffic jams to deliver to you. In Melbourne Mohammed, Sam and Bobby agree the streets are better laid out but drivers don't give way and in Brisbane, Tyler and Jamie almost have the roads to themselves!
